Run the Quay 5K

Donnie ran in the Run the Quay 5K in our hometown Fuquay-Varina on Saturday 6/7.  He ran about 10 minute 45 second miles which the Nike app that he uses said was his fastet time to date.  His offical chip time was 33.47 which is about 10 minute 52 second mile pace.  For his age group, he was 15th out of 24.  

Joey, Johnny, and I did the 1 mile Fun Run.  I beat both kids:-)  I'll never be a real runner, but it was fun to get out there with the family!

Afterward, we attended the Celebrate Fuquay-Varina town festival where there were vendors, free rides, and other demonstrations.

The Fuquay-Varina Library had an after school program today about chromatography.  They had the kids use empty plastic yogurt cups and rubber bands to make work areas on white shirts (child provided) and then use Sharpie markers in lots of fun colors to draw designs.  Afterward, they used a plastic pippette to apply rubbing alcohol to the designs to watch the color spread.  The kids made fantastic designs, and the shirts turned out great!  Pictured for the daily is Joey's shirt.  Here is Johnny's shirt (I guess my hand blocked the flash because the lighting is off).

The girl shirts were very pink:-)  I gave Joey the 'name' idea.  I'd like to make one with butterflies.  Thankfully the librarian sent us home with the yogurt cups and I have plenty of Sharpies.

After the rubbing alcohol is thoroughly dry, run the shirt in the dryer on high for 15 minutes to set.  Wash separately the first time.

Vance Spring Festival

The boys' school held a Spring Festival this past Saturday.  What a success!  The event was outside, and it was a terrific day.  The PTA sold t-shirts, food, and tickets for the games and bounce houses.  The raffled off themed baskets put together by the classes.  I was hoping to win the gift card basket or NC State themed basket but better luck next year.  Johnny spent most of his time in the bounce houses.  Joey and I did all the games, made a stepping stone, and ran the Rubber Ducky Game for one of the volunteer slots.  At the end, the principal and assistant principal did karaoke songs picked by the students and then got pies thrown in their faces.  They sure were good sports.

Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center

Joey's 5th grade class took a field trip this past Thursday to the Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Camp.  I went as a chaperon.  We canoed, learned about creatures in the lake and nearby stream, talked about habitats and took a hike around the lake, learned about prey vs. predators, and had a pioneer experience making candles and cornbread.  It was a full and fun-filled day!
